If you do not agree stop now and do not view any of my videos. Hoist ropes are used to lift and lower the elevator. As they travel over the sheave hundreds of thousands of times they begin to compress and eventually wear out. The first signs of wear is breakage of the individual strands. The strands can be obscured from sight by the inner clay like cosmoline core which acts as a rust inhibitor. This too is compressed and pushed out from the inside to the outside of the rope. Close investigation is necessary. There are times when rope damage is simply obvious as in this video. The ropes are "shot" and need to be replaced ASAP.
