Pull a disabled climber over a long distance with 3/1 leverage. Unlike the block and tackle that requires a really long rope only a short working loop is needed so that a load can be pulled almost as far as the length of the rope. All you need is a 3oz plastic part to create an endless come along. Also required is a climbing rope and two prussics (rope loops). One prussic needs to be attahed to a secure anchor to work as primary lifeline. (RopeTie is not rated for primary lifeline and requires a safe backup).

Once an old derelict school house, the project team here had taken it over, and started to improve it. ie a roof that didn't leek ... too much. Jazzy Power Chair Hoist

Mobility Hoist. First, this is my first video on You Tube. I built this hoist for my parents to allow my dad to get full use out of his Jazzy scooter. The hoist took a few weeks to work out all of the details, but is fully fuctional and they have had no issues with it. The van is a Ford Minivan with the seats that fold down for cargo. Mounting the hoist to the frame was the most difficult part due to the seat storage. I had to make a mount that would allow the seat to still open and close without modificaton but still be more than sturdy enough for 2 older people to use without worrying about them. The winch is a wireless control unit which really keeps the tangle of wire to a minimum. The blue straps are too long on purpose to allow them to be swung under wheels like a jump rope and are normally velcroed to the frame that they are attached to. The power supply is fused at the battery, and there is an "On & Off" switch on the top of the main post to prevent any issues if the remote buttons are accidently pushed when the hoist is not in use.

The kids wanted to make a "ropes course" in the maple tree. I didn't have any pulleys, so we made a very squeaky an inefficient one ourselves and then had some fun hoisting the kids and one neighbor. We made the wear helmets which came in handy when Callum tested the first draft of the pulley by hoisting his bike over his head. When the rope failed, his helmet received the bike instead of his head :)

Elevator governor

This is a Kone elevator governor in operation. You know how, in movies, someone cuts the elevator cables and it plunges to certain doom? This mechanism prevents that. The rotating wheel has two flyweights, held back by springs. If the elevator moves too quickly in either direction, these will fly outwards and hit the stop arm at the top, electrically shutting off the elevator motor via a limit switch, and mechanically stopping it by driving wedges against the guide rails in the shaft. The rope running over the pulley seen here is seperate from the hoist ropes and only serves to activate safety mechanisms.

The operator is free to focus solely on the load and surrounding area, creating a load movement process that is both fast and safe. What is ControlMaster Anti-sway? A traveling movement control system developed to reduce and prevent the load sway. How does it work? The ControlMaster Anti-sway System automatically adjusts the crane traveling movements by using a mathematical calculation to estimate load swing. The calculation is based on the distance between the center of the rope drum and the load (pendulum length). The system maintains, accelerates, decelerates or reverses the travel speed/directions to keep the hoist directly over top of the load.

This is a personnel and equipment hoist that I designed for a coal mine in West Virginia. The hoist is 40000 pound rope pull at at 500 feet a minute. There are two seperate spring applied brakes. Normal stopping and starting is very smooth and repeatable. I believe several safety features are unique to my design. The hoist will automatically take up slack if the magnetic brake car stops on the slope. There is a quick acting slack rope switch. A torque slip clutch protects against an overhauling shock load, and is rated 4x normal torque, while the yield strength of all the mechanical components is 7x normal full load torque. VEMA High Angle Rescue Unit "HAR"

VEMA High-angle rescue Unit (HAR) is a Non-profit / Public Benefit Organization that operates within the boundaries of Kwazulu Natal. VEMA HAR is made up of 10 highly motivated and dedicated members; including highly trained paramedics and experienced rock climbers. The unit is the only volunteer rescue unit of its kind in Kwazulu Natal that has its own high angle rescue trained paramedics. The unit is self funded by the members. The unit trains on a regular basis in different terrains and conditions so we can be prepared for any emergency. We currently train with the South African Air Force (15th Squadron) doing helicopter evacuations during both daytime and night time and at times with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Search and Rescue Unit. The unit also works with National Sea Rescue Institute for maritime rescues. The unit responds to any call to either carry out or assist in rescues, whether technical or not. This even includes assisting the SPCA with animal rescue, where one of the members has specialised dog rescue harnesses and equipment specific to animal rescues and recoveries. Because the unit is a support service, they therefore assist any emergency service that requires high angle rescue. As a rescue unit, all members are on 24hr standby. The unit have assisted the Fire Department and Durban Metro Police with rope access to vehicles that have gone down embankments, to retrieve bodies or injured occupants. Rebecca: We had been looking for a friendly and quiet place to spend Christmas and were a bit disappointed that this 500 soul village was so packed with tourists that it was almost impossible to find accomodation. Anke and I searched for 2 hours! T: Well, I was taking care of the luggage in the meantime. Not that bad a choice, listening to Jack Johnson and watching the impressive mountain scenery on this beautiful day. Finally, we found a nice hostel for the first night and figured out that in this packed village we had to choose dorms if we didn't want to go camping. R: And after the snoring Israeli guy with the dangerous looking girlfriend had left, the 4-bed-dorm was fine. T: And so were the hosts in this family-run accomodation. R: On our first day, we walked to a waterfall, a short easy walk through the valley with views of the surrounding mountains.
